Is Google Trying to Make SEO Redundant?
This was a question a friend asked me when we were talking about the recent development deployed by Google on the search engine result page SERP, one could think that might be the beginning of the end of organic search. With the right-hand Ads removed Google has increased the number of the Ads at the top of the SERP from an average of 2 to 4 which has pushed down organic results below on the page.
See screen shots below.
While I was discussing this with a colleague on why Google remove right-hand Ads and placing up to 4 Ads at the top of organic search results, he said: “what did u expect of Google? all adjustments and changes are aimed towards a selfish goal – to make more money” when we look at this vividly it’s obvious Google wants to make more money.
Rightly every business is set up to make a profit so also Google. A layman searching for a product or service online can’t differentiate between an organic results and Ads, even when they see Ad tags on results, they can’t still accurately differentiate between the two kinds of results on the SERP, they click mostly results at the top or whatever matches their keywords and intentions, pushing organic result below the threshold is an indication that Google is giving PPC 100% priority over SEO.
Then, the contest for the top page has just begun, advertisers would need to bid more and ensure higher quality score to be among the top four Ads on SERP.
What does this mean for retailers?
This implies those who have more money to spend takes the top spot, It also means the right column will now be the exclusive domain of product listing Ads PLAs (as well as ads in the knowledge graph). PLAs are increasingly popular and, therefore, important to Google. So as a smart marketer you need to adjust real quick. Learn more about quality score and CPC bidding.
What does this mean for companies?
This is the time to work on your brand and become the brand that people think of before they even get to typing a query into Google. Whether it’s paid listings, competitors, vertical search or anything else that may get in the way of potential customers visiting your site, try to make sure they get to you first and then remember who you are, so that they come straight back the next time.
Here is What a Digital Marketing Consultant in Nigeria Has to Say
I noticed that in my recent campaigns. Needless to say, this new move will make Google a lot richer as advertisers jostling for the first three to four ad spots on search pages will likely bid more on competitive keywords. While learning about and implementing quality scores in PPC campaigns may be a smart thing to do, SMEs should start investing more in organic growth. This is now the time to take SEO more seriously.
Where is the place of SEO in this?
I think this is the time to strive to rank on the first page like never before, SEO professionals need to embrace this improvisation and brace up and be smarter, with your schema markup, metadata, your ability to convince searchers to click on your link on the SERP is embedded in your ability to convince them with your title and meta description and also ensure your landing page converts them.Share This
